Boat Insurance Coverage FAQs - What’s Covered and What’s Not

Insurance can seem confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. Let’s break it down in plain English, so you know exactly what you’re getting (and what you’re not).

What does boat insurance actually cover?

More than most expect! At SkiSafe, we offer comprehensive coverage designed specifically for recreational boats, so you can build a policy that fits how you actually use your boat.

Here are some of our key coverages:

  • “All-Risk” Coverage: Covers against all risks to your watercraft, such as fire, theft, and collision, unless the risk is specifically excluded from the policy.
  • Agreed Value Coverage: If your boat is the subject of a covered total loss, the policy will pay you the agreed value stated on the policy without adjusting for depreciation.
  • Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability: Coverage for your liability to another person for bodily injury or property damage arising out of the ownership of operation of your watercraft.
  • Medical Payments: Coverage for a third party’s medical expenses without regard to your liability.
  • Towing and Roadside Assistance Coverage: Reimburses you for tows or service requests up to the policy limit.

Are personal items on my boat covered?

It depends on your policy. Coverage for personal items may be available to protect things like fishing gear, portable electronics, and other belongings you bring on board.

Just keep in mind, this coverage is designed for accidental damage or loss, not everyday wear and tear.

Does my policy cover me if someone else is driving my boat?

Yes, coverage typically follows the boat, not just the owner.

Am I covered in both freshwater and saltwater?

This depends on the navigational limits you select for your policy. Some policies cover both, while others may have restrictions based on where your needs.

Is my boat covered while in storage or being transported?

Typically, yes. Coverage for your boat can extend to when it is out of the water, in storage, or being trailered (but it’s important to confirm).

What does boat insurance NOT cover?

Common exclusions may include damage arising from wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or intentional acts.

Is damage from storms or bad weather covered?

It depends on your policy. Here are some weather-related coverage options worth considering:

  1. Named Storm Coverage
  2. Freeze Coverage
  3. Wind and Hail Coverage

That said, damage caused by lack of preparation or maintenance (like not properly securing your boat) may not be covered, so it’s always smart to take precautions.

What happens if my boat is stolen?

Theft is typically covered under your policy, but what you pay out of pocket may depend on your anti-theft setup. Theft losses may be subject to your policy’s standard deductible or a special deductible depending on your boat’s anti-theft system if SkiSafe’s SS-ANTI+ endorsement is applicable.

Am I covered if I hit another boat or object?

Typically, yes, up to your policy limit. This is where your liability coverage comes into play. If you’re responsible for an accident that causes damage to another boat, dock, or property, your policy may help cover those costs in the case of a covered claim.

Does my policy cover fuel spills or environmental damage?

At SkiSafe, we offer coverage for fuel spills, environmental damage, and pollution. Contact us to learn more.

What if I only use my boat part of the year?

You’re still covered, and you may even qualify for a discount if your boat is out of commission for at least 4 consecutive months.

What other discounts do you offer?

At SkiSafe, we offer various discounts that can help lower your premium, including:

  • Boating Safety Course: Completing a qualified safety course can help you learn the rules of the water and save on your insurance.
  • Clean Driving Record: A strong driving record can help reduce your rate, just like with auto insurance.
  • Navigational Area: Boating in protected waters (like the Chesapeake Bay or Long Island Sound) may qualify you for additional savings.
  • Multi-Craft: Insure more than one watercraft with us and receive a multi-policy discount.
  • Winter Lay-Up: Save when your boat is out of the water (the discount mentioned in the question above).
